Shop Local Campaign

Marketing students at Oklahoma Baptist University have partnered with Executive Director Leslie Merritt at Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce to help design a marketing plan, marketing schedule, and marketing campaign packet for the members and the local community. The goal of Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce is to provide support to the community of Tecumseh through advocating for businesses, education, and economic growth.

The students are taking a Marketing Analytics course, currently taught by Dr. Daryl Green, professor of business and Dickinson Chair of Business. He’s assigned to each team of students, a local business, to help serve as Marketing Analytical Interns. From this experience, each student has the opportunity to gain real world experience by utilizing lessons learned in class.

The two students, Roland McGowan and SayVon Milton, have used social media analytics to advocate shopping locally during the holiday season. The students have also analyzed demographic insights within each social media platform to target audiences outside the current followers to help encourage local spending.

“I’m a hands-on learner so it has been helpful for me to actually apply lessons learned in class to this internship. I’ve also enjoyed learning from Leslie Merritt during our weekly meetings,” SayVon said.

“I really enjoy working with Leslie and the city of Tecumseh. I’m excited to see the results of our hard work at the end of the semester,” Roland said.

“Our organization had a vision to create a shop local campaign for our local businesses for the holidays. SayVon and Roland took the vision and made it a reality. The passion and commitment from these two gentlemen have been amazing. They are eager and willing to help our business community and that is something you can’t teach,” Leslie said.

The students plan to analyze insights and continue to spread awareness about shopping locally during the holiday season. As the students approach the end of the semester. The ultimate goal of the students is to carry out the organizations mission statement of promoting a higher quality of life for the community of Tecumseh through their marketing efforts.
