OBU Students Work with Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce in Educating the Community and Marketing the Chamber

By Emily Wilmoth, Kailee McCrary, and Kady Sebastian

Shawnee, Oklahoma: Through the School of Business at Oklahoma Baptist University, three students have had the opportunity to work with Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce. Emily Wilmoth, Kailee McCrary, and Kady Sebastian are students in Dr. Daryl Green’s Small Business Marketing class. In this class, they were assigned to a small business to work with for their micro-internship. The Chamber is a non-profit organization that helps businesses and helps build a tight knit community in Tecumseh.

Throughout the micro-internship, Wilmoth, McCrary, and Sebastian have worked with Executive Director, Leslie Merritt and Tecumseh High School intern, Delaney Brown to educate the community on what the chamber is there for and to expand their social media presence. During their time working with the Chamber, these students created a commercial to help advertise the chamber. (View the commercial by clicking here.) This commercial is set to be released on all the Chambers social media accounts, including their new TikTok account.

TikTok is a current way to reach the younger generation and inform them on what their local chamber can do for them. Whether it be a business they open or looking for job opportunities, the Chamber provides many helpful resources to all ages.

Sebastian referred to the internship as “such a great strategy for my peers and I to get real world marketing experience and learn the insides of such a helpful small business.” Many people are not aware of the resources available to them in their communities. The Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce is a wonderful way to get involved and bring the community closer.

“Working with the chamber has allowed me to see the impact that is created when the community is interconnected. Businesses grow best when they are supported by others around them.” Wilmoth states.

McCrary stated that “over the course of the semester, I have learned that working with the chamber has allowed me to grow my knowledge of how businesses can work together to grow a community.”
